Initial Assessment

Intial Assessment Screenshot 1 Target Skills: Initial Assessment provides an ICT-based initial assessment which reports a student's level of skill in literacy or numeracy against National Standards and the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Core Curricula from Entry 1 right up to Level 2. The assessments give two reports (an overall summary, and one with more detail), and provide guidance to students and tutors on the appropriate level to begin using Target Skills learning materials.
Each assessment is adaptive to individual responses, so that students with lower-level skills are likely to have a shorter assessment than those with higher-level skills. If there is web access, results can be stored in the student's profile, and updated if the assessment is repeated at a later date. The web site then tracks individual and group progress.

Basic Skills Screener is a first-stage assessment in literacy and numeracy. Its short, easy-to-use assessments provide a good indication of whether a learner is competent at Level 2 of the national standards in literacy and numeracy, or working at or below that level. Basic Skills Screener Upgrades provide ten different assessments in literacy and ten in numeracy, generated from a central bank of questions.

Basic Skills Screener also comes with a tutor management tool which allows learners' scores to be stored in a central database. This means that the software can be used in outreach centres on a laptop.

Basic Skills Screener meets LSC requirements for the initial identification of basic skills needs.

Target Skills content CDs

All Target Skills content CDs contain materials written and mapped to the new Core Curricula. The materials are presented in modules. Each module contains at least one of three kinds of learning objects: those that explore skills, those that allow students to practise the skills taught, and those that test students in the skills.

Learners encounter the resources in two ways: from the CD they can access modules by sub-level or by curriculum subsection; from the web they can access their own action pack of modules selected by their tutor, which can include material from all CDs.

Activities include animations, interactive slideshows, spreadsheet tables and charts, writing frames, number tools, word and sentence builders, games and self-tests. Integrated tasks give students the opportunity to combine skills from different curriculum areas.

The discs supports learners and their tutors in a wide range of adult education contexts, such as FE colleges, community and family programmes, training organisations, the workplace, and prisons.

What is it?

Go Skills

Target Skills for Work is a series of new titles in the Target Skills suite designed to help learners who work in specific sectors develop their literacy and numeracy skills in the context of the workplace. These titles help learners develop their employability and improve their career prospects.

Skills for Logistics The Target Skills suite provides an ICT-based initial assessment, a series of ICT learning materials, and a web-based management and tracking system for those delivering the new national curricula in adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL.

Target Skills for Work learning material

All Target Skills for Work material is mapped to the core curricula in adult literacy and numeracy at Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. The learning material is organised into topics corresponding to areas of work such as health and safety and customer care.

Activity types include drag and drop simulations, multiple choice and multiple select questions, click and stick matching activities, filling in forms and text entry.

Who's it for?

Target Skills for Work is aimed at learners on vocational courses or working in the retail, care, manufacturing and hospitality sectors, and those who support them. The material is mapped to the requirements of the adult literacy and numeracy core curricula, and concentrates on the essential literacy and numeracy skills required for work, including basic number skills, and reading, writing, speaking and listening.

What does it contain?

There are currently eight Target Skills for Work titles available:

  • Target Skills for Work: Retail
  • Target Skills for Work: Care
  • Target Skills for Work: Manufacturing
  • Target Skills for Work: Hospitality
  • Target Skills for Work: Construction
  • Target Skills for Work: Cleaning
  • Target Skills for Work: Passenger Transport

Each unit consists of a learning activity, two practice activities, a page of tips and a self-test. Individual units concentrate on a specific skill area, such as filling in forms, speaking to customers or taking measurements. The activities encourage a ‘dip-in, dip-out' approach – each task lasts no more than ten minutes – and are designed for self-learning.

How do I use it?

The tasks are all brief, work-related and self-contained, making them ideal for use in the workplace or in informal training contexts. Learners can use the bite-sized chunks of learning to develop new skills or confirm and develop existing skills.

Learners and tutors should work together to identify the most appropriate units for the individual learner. Once the learner has a learning plan of units to tackle, they can work on their own, at their own pace, fitting in their learning in short sessions around their everyday work.

The units are best used as part of a wider learning programme, as the resources provided complement other methods of teaching and learning. Using materials like these allows tutors to focus their time on support rather than on marking and assessment.

The CD can be accessed in two ways:

Standalone – all CD resources can be accessed and an end-of-session learning record is generated
With the management system – resources can be tailored for the individual; all work is tracked and stored on the web site.

Target Skills for V(M)LE

Many Target Skills titles are now available for your VLE. CTAD has adapted many of the existing titles and all new titles are produced VLE-ready. All Target Skills titles ready for VLE are listed below. Together they make a powerful and rich resource with a wide variety of activity types, some paper-based backup and support.

Technically assured

All titles conform to the SCORM 1.2 standards, as well as accessibility and other technical standards, so you can be confident that they will sit comfortably in your VLE and run smoothly for all your users. Our materials are fully tested in all of the mainstream browsers and learning environments to make sure that they look and work at their best.

We've also optimised all of our media for web delivery, so you won't need to go and make a cup of tea while waiting for it to arrive on your screen! And you don't need to worry whether you've got the right plugin, as we only use one: all audio/video/animation playback uses Macromedia Flash to ensure the widest reach for our materials.

Secure and updatable

With our Target Skills suite of resources on your VLE, you can easily personalise it to suit your learners’ particular interests and needs without having to involve the network manager or the technical team. Upgrades are quick and simple too – it’s part of the service we provide. We can even upload updates directly to your VLE so you don’t have to think about it.

Find that curriculum element

When you buy titles from our Target Skills suite of resources for your VLE, we will give you access to our powerful search tool that lets you find all the resources on your VLE that cover the curriculum elements in a learner’s individual learning plan. You can then assign the resources to that learner. You can also look up resources mapped against other curricula and standards.

Impress the inspectors!

With the current drive to maximise the efficient use of technology in learning, CTAD’s Target Skills resources, combined with your VLE, will more than satisfy those inspecting your ICT-based activity. The resources are fully mapped to the national standards and curricula for adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL, and they feed your VLE tracking tools with reports that show a clear progress against the standards.

Using these resources with your VLE’s bookmarking facility lets learners go back to the place where they left off, which is also useful as part of monitoring the learner’s progress and verifying teaching and learning quality.

Support

CTAD’s technical support team is standing by to help you in the initial set-up stages and beyond to ensure that the experience is a good one for all involved.
